Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a short-term psychological treatment which is particularly suitable for problems ranging from phobias and panic attacks to eating disorders, depression, chronic pain and enduring psychological disorders.

The process of CBT can be understood by comparing the brain to a computer that has caught a computer virus. The computer needs to be reprogrammed and rebooted to work normally again. Similarly, a person’s thinking patterns need to be altered so that the brain learns to think in a more normal and functional way. When our thinking is dysfunctional, our behaviours also become dysfunctional. The rebooting takes place by altering behaviours to accommodate and help the thought processes to change. CBT encourages the person to challenge their beliefs about themselves and their abilities so that they achieve a more realistic view of themselves, the world and others. All emotions that we feel are preceded by thoughts. If we return our thoughts to normal, a person will feel much better in mind and body.
