Birth control

The time to stop using contraception varies depending on the form of birth control you use.

Barrier contraception: (condoms, diaphragm) does not affect your fertility.  You should stop using these forms of contraception as soon as your body is ready to start trying for a baby.

Hormonal contraception: (combined pill, progesterone only pill, implants and injections).  It may take a few months for your cycle to resume ovulation and be ready for conception.  When you have your 1st period after stopping this type of contraception your body is ready to conceive.  With depo-provera the time is longer – average conception is 9 months.

Coils: (IUD copper coil and IUS progesterone Mirena coil) after removal your cycle will return to normal usually after a month but it may be longer with a Mirena coil.  Arrange for it to be removed at your GP surgery.  You can then use another form of contraception until you are ready.

Natural family planning methods do not need to be stopped until you are ready to start trying for a baby.
