Speech and Language developmental delay

This is the most common developmental problem in preschool children. About 6% 3-4year olds show problems, more commonly in boys.

Speech – the motor act of communication through verbal expression originating from the mouth. It is different from the word language. Speech delay is considered if the speech development is significantly below the norm for children of a similar age group.

Language – the knowledge of a symbol based system of communication between people. Is an understanding of meaning (not just a sound) and a measure of intelligence.  Language delays are more serious than speech delays.

The boundaries for normal development are wide. Parents of a 2 year old boy with obviously normal development and a vocabulary of 10-20 words may be comparing him with a little boy or girl from the same street with considerably more words (200) both of which are in the normal range.

If there are problems in this area a speech and language specialist can assess you child and recommend any further treatment should if be necessary.
